সহকারী কোয়ান্টাম সংখ্যা, l ( Subsidiary quantum number) বা আজিমুথাল কোয়ান্টাম সংখ্যা (Azimithal quantum number): বৈজ্ঞানিক সামারফেল্ড এই কোয়ান্টাম সংখ্যার অবতারণা করেন । তিনি বলেন, যে কোন শক্তিস্তর কতকগুলো উপস্তরের সমষ্টি মাত্র । এই উপস্তরসমূহের কোনটি বৃত্তিকার আবার কোনটি উপবৃত্তাকার । উপস্তরের আকৃতি ব্যাখ্যা করার জন্য সহকারী কোয়ান্টাম সংখ্যা ব্যবহৃত হয় । একে l দ্বারা চিহ্নিত করা হয় । উপস্তরগুলোর সংখ্যা কোয়ান্টাম শর্ত অনুসারে সীমিত করা হয়েছে । প্রধান কোয়ান্টাম সংখ্যা n এর যে কোন মানের জন্য l এর মান 0 , 1 , 2 করে ( n-1) পর্যন্ত সর্বমোট n সংখ্যক পাওয়া যাবে । যেমন n= 1 হলে l=0 হবে অর্থাৎ প্রথম শক্তিস্তরে একটি মাত্র উপস্তর আছে । n= 2 হলে l= 0 , 1 হবে অর্থাৎ দ্বিতীয় শক্তিস্তরে দুইটি উপস্তর আছে। n= 3 হলে l= 0, 1, 2 অর্থাৎ তৃতীয় শক্তিস্তরটি তিনটি উপস্তরের সমষ্টি । এই সাহায্যেকারী স্তরে ইলেকট্রনগুলো s,p, d ও f সাব শেল ( Sub-shell) -এ বিন্যস্ত হয় ।

প্রধান কোয়ান্টাম সংখ্যা , n (Principal quantum number): ইহা হচ্ছে বৈজ্ঞানিক বোর কর্তৃক প্রস্তাবিত শক্তি স্তর ( Energy level) । পরবর্তীতে একে মূল শক্তিস্তর বলে আখ্যায়িত করা হয়েছে এবং n দ্বারা সূচিত করা হয়েছে । বৈজ্ঞানিক বোরের মতবাদ অনুসারে ইলেকট্রনের সেই কক্ষপথকেই অনুমোদিত বলে গন্য করা হয়, যেখানে ইলেকট্রনের কৌনিক ভরবেগ , mvr=nh/2π , এখানে n = 1,2,3 ইত্যাদি পূর্ণ সংখ্যা ।এই n কেই প্রধান কোয়ান্টাম সংখ্যা বলে । এর মান নিউক্লিয়াস হতে ইলেকট্রনের কক্ষপথের গড় দূরত্ব অর্থাৎ প্রধান শক্তিস্তরের অপেক্ষিক অবস্থান ও আকার বুঝা যায় । n এর মান যত বেশি হবে প্রধান শক্তিস্তরটি নিউক্লিয়াস হতে তত বেশি দূরে অবস্থান করে এবং পরমাণুর আকারও তত বেশি বড় হবে, যেখানে n= 1 দ্বারা প্রথম শক্তিস্তর, n= 2 দ্বারা দ্বিতীয় শক্তিস্তর, n= 3 দ্বারা তৃতীয় শক্তিস্তর প্রভৃতি বুঝানো হয়ে থাকে । প্রধান শক্তিস্তরের এই গননা নিউক্লিয়াসের নিকটতম শক্তিস্তর হতে শুরু করা হয় । প্রাচীন পদ্ধতি অনুসারে n= 1, 2 , 3 ইত্যাদি শক্তিস্তর - সমূহকে যথাক্রমে K, L, M, N প্রভৃতি অক্ষর দ্বারা প্রকাশ করা হত এবং এদেরকে শেল বলা হত।
